WGU's NP clinical model surprises a lot of students: you find your own preceptor, you need two sites, and the paperwork can take months. This FAQ answers the questions we hear most, using only WGU's own requirements and vocabulary, from the 650 direct patient care hours and the Field Experience Page to the Affiliation Agreement and the telehealth caps.
Does WGU find my preceptor for me?
No. WGU makes NP students find their own preceptor and keeps no list of preceptors. What you get is a Placement Coordinator on the Clinical Learning and Placement Support (CLPS) team who reviews and approves the preceptor and site you bring and helps establish the Affiliation Agreement. The Placement Coordinator does not source or assign a preceptor for you. This is different from WGU's prelicensure BSN program, where WGU secures placements itself.
How many clinical hours does the WGU NP program require?
The MSN FNP and PMHNP tracks each require 650 direct patient care clinical hours, logged across three Clinical Internship courses (Clinical Internship I, II, and III) in Term 5 of a five-term, roughly 2.5-year path. The per-course split is about 215, 215, and 220 hours; confirm the exact numbers against your current WGU student handbook, since requirements change. Kansas residents seeking Kansas licensure who started on or after March 1, 2025 complete 750 hours instead of 650.
How many of my hours can be telehealth?
It depends on your track. FNP allows telehealth for up to 10 percent of hours, which is 65 of the 650 hours, so the rest must be in person. PMHNP allows telehealth for up to 75 percent of hours, reflecting how much psychiatric care is delivered remotely, with the remainder in person. Plan your site around these caps: an FNP site must be able to deliver the large majority of your hours face to face.
Who is eligible to be my preceptor?
Every WGU preceptor needs an active unencumbered license, national certification in the specialty, and at least two years of current specialty experience. Beyond that:
- FNP: a board-certified NP (family, adult, peds, neonatal, women's health, or geriatric), an MD or DO board-certified in Family or Internal Medicine, or a CNM holding an MSN or higher.
- PMHNP: a board-certified psychiatrist, a board-certified PMHNP, or certain licensed behavioral-health providers, with limits WGU applies.
If a candidate's eligibility is unclear, confirm with your Placement Coordinator before you commit time, because an ineligible preceptor cannot be approved.
How many clinical sites do I need?
A minimum of two. WGU requires at least two clinical sites so your 650 hours reflect more than one practice environment. Each site has its own Affiliation Agreement and its own compliance onboarding, so two sites means roughly double the coordination. Building the second site into your plan from the start avoids a mid-program scramble.
What is an Affiliation Agreement and how long does it take?
An Affiliation Agreement is a legal contract between WGU and each clinical site that authorizes you to train there. It can take up to six months to negotiate, because each site's legal or administrative team reviews and signs it. Since you need at least two sites, and each agreement can run up to six months, this is the single biggest driver of the WGU clinical timeline. Your Placement Coordinator helps establish these agreements once you bring an approved preceptor and site.
When should I start the placement process?
About one year before Clinical Internship I. WGU asks you to engage your Placement Coordinator roughly a year ahead specifically because the Affiliation Agreement can take up to six months and you need two of them. Starting a full year out is what keeps you on schedule. At a flat WGU FNP tuition of 6,955 dollars per six-month term, a missed term from late placement is real money, not just a delay.
Where do I log my clinical hours?
On WGU's own Field Experience Page and Activity Log inside the Student Portal. That is the official record your evaluators review. Separately, compliance items like background checks and immunizations run through DISA Healthcare Technology (formerly American DataBank) on the Complio platform, and individual sites may add their own onboarding through ACEMAPP, CastleBranch, or a similar system. Those are compliance steps; your hours always live on the Field Experience Page.
Do I have to pay my preceptor?
No. WGU preceptors are unpaid volunteers, so you do not pay the preceptor for supervising your hours. If you use an independent placement service like ours, our fee covers sourcing, verification, and the affiliation-agreement legwork; it is never a payment to the preceptor. Independent NP preceptor placement runs roughly 1,500 to 2,500 dollars per rotation, with psychiatric placements at the higher end, and you pay only once the preceptor and site are confirmed.
Is WGU's nursing program accredited?
Yes. The baccalaureate, master's, and post-graduate APRN certificate nursing programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) through June 2034, not ACEN. WGU's institutional accreditor is the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). Note that WGU confers no DNP; the highest nursing credential is the MSN plus a post-master's APRN certificate.
Which students do you help, and which does WGU place itself?
We serve the MSN FNP and PMHNP tracks, the post-master's APRN certificates in FNP and PMHNP, and the RN-to-BSN 35-hour community field experience. We do not serve prelicensure BSN students, because WGU secures those placements itself. Also note that the FNP and PMHNP programs are not available to residents of California, DC, Louisiana, New York, North Dakota, or Washington.
