What Does WGU Preceptor Placement Cost?

An independent preceptor placement service runs roughly 1,500 to 2,500 dollars per rotation. Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) placements sit toward the lower part of that range, and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) placements sit at the higher end, because qualified psychiatric preceptors are harder to source and their eligibility rules are narrower.

This is a per-rotation price. WGU MSN NP students complete 650 direct patient care clinical hours across three courses, Clinical Internship I, Clinical Internship II, and Clinical Internship III, in Term 5 of the five-term path. Because WGU requires a minimum of two clinical sites, the number of rotations you need placed, and therefore your total, depends on how your preceptors and sites line up across those courses.

You pay only once the preceptor and site are confirmed. There is no charge for us to begin searching, and you are not billed for a placement that never materializes.

This structure exists because the risk of an unfilled placement should sit with us, not with you. WGU makes NP students find their own preceptor and keeps no list of preceptors, so the search is the hard part. We take that on, and payment follows a confirmed, WGU-approvable match rather than preceding it.

The fee covers three things: sourcing a WGU-approvable preceptor, verifying that preceptor and both required clinical sites, and shepherding the Affiliation Agreement so you clear the Field Experience Page on time.

• Sourcing: identifying a preceptor who meets WGU eligibility, an active unencumbered license, national certification in the specialty, and at least two years of current specialty experience.
• Verification: confirming that credentialing before you commit, so an approval is not held up later by the Clinical Learning and Placement Support (CLPS) team.
• Affiliation Agreement legwork: the Affiliation Agreement is a legal contract that can take up to six months to negotiate, and we do the coordination that keeps it moving.

The fee never includes a payment to the preceptor. At WGU, preceptors are unpaid volunteers, and paying a preceptor for hours is not part of our service.

Here is the cost-of-delay math that is specific to WGU. WGU FNP tuition is a flat 6,955 dollars per six-month term. Because tuition is charged per term rather than per credit, a stalled term is not a small line item, it is another full 6,955 dollars of tuition for time you spend waiting rather than completing clinical hours.

WGU asks students to engage the Placement Coordinator about one year before Clinical Internship I, and the Affiliation Agreement alone can take up to six months. If your preceptor or site is not confirmed when Term 5 begins, you can be pushed into an additional term. Against a placement fee of 1,500 to 2,500 dollars, a single avoided term of 6,955 dollars is a meaningful comparison, and that is before counting the delay to your graduation and licensure.

None of this is a WGU penalty or a guarantee that a delay always adds exactly one term. It is the plain arithmetic of a flat-per-term tuition model: the longer placement takes, the more full terms you may pay for.

This pricing is for the WGU tracks where students must secure their own preceptor: the MSN Family Nurse Practitioner and MSN Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner programs, the post-master's APRN certificates in FNP and PMHNP, and the RN-to-BSN 35-hour community field experience.

We do not serve WGU prelicensure BSN students, because WGU secures those placements itself. WGU also confers no DNP, so the highest nursing credential we place for is the MSN plus a post-master's APRN certificate.

One eligibility note that affects who can enroll at all: the FNP and PMHNP programs are not available to residents of California, DC, Louisiana, New York, North Dakota, or Washington.
